The GA Level 4 Award in the Principles of Veterinary Laser Therapies is a pioneering, Ofqual-regulated qualification designed for veterinary professionals who want to enhance their expertise in therapeutic laser treatments.

Delivered in partnership with Precision Animal Laser Academy, this award provides in-depth knowledge of photobiomodulation (PBM) and equips learners with the knowledge to apply laser technology safely and effectively in clinical practice.

As a groundbreaking qualification within veterinary rehabilitation, it helps practitioners deliver non-invasive, evidence-based treatments that improve animal welfare and clinical outcomes.

Learners who achieve this award are entitled to use the post-nominals:
Level 4 Award ALT (Animal Laser Therapies).

Learners can upgrade to the full Certificate (including practical training at one of our venues) upon completion if required. The four units from this award won’t need to be repeated.

Precision Animal Laser Academy

This course is designed for professionals already working within animal health and therapy, including:

  • Veterinary nurses
  • Animal/veterinary physiotherapists
  • Canine hydrotherapists
  • Rehabilitation and therapy practitioners

It is particularly suited for those working in:

  • Veterinary practices
  • Specialist rehabilitation clinics
  • Sporting and working dog facilities
  • Animal therapy centres

Entry Requirements

Learners must:

  • Be aged 18 or over
  • Hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject, such as:
    • Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing
    • Level 3 or 4 Certificate/Diploma in Canine Hydrotherapy
    • Level 6 Diploma in Animal/Veterinary Physiotherapy
  • Have at least one year of post-qualification experience in a veterinary/clinical setting
  • Possess a good standard of spoken and written English (e.g. GCSE Grade C / Grade 4 or equivalent)

The qualification is made up of four mandatory units, providing 11 credits in total.

Units include:

  1. The Core Principles of Photobiomodulation
    • Understand the science of PBM, including how photons interact with cells to influence pain, inflammation, and tissue repair.

     2. Clinical Indications for Photobiomodulation

    • Explore treatment approaches for musculoskeletal, neurological, and acute conditions, including contraindications and safe treatment planning.

 

     3. Physics and the Components of Laser

    • Learn the technical aspects of laser systems, classifications, wavelengths, and how different parameters impact treatment outcomes.

 

     4. Laser Health and Safety

    • Develop a comprehensive understanding of regulatory requirements, risk management, safety protocols, and essential clinic documentation.

Learners will compile a portfolio of evidence demonstrating knowledge of all four units. 

This qualification is assessed as Pass/Fail. Learners who are not successful at first attempt may resubmit within the registration period.

Completing this award provides a strong foundation for further professional development, including progression to:

  • GA Level 4 Certificate in Veterinary Laser Applications
  • Specialist roles in veterinary rehabilitation, sporting dog therapy, or animal physiotherapy
  • Opportunities in teaching, research, or advanced rehabilitation practices
