The GA Level 4 Award in Advanced Aquatic Treadmill Therapies is a specialised qualification designed for canine hydrotherapists seeking to expand their expertise in treadmill based techniques. This qualification provides an in depth understanding of the clinical applications of aquatic treadmill therapy, equipping practitioners with advanced knowledge and practical skills to optimise treatment outcomes for a range of musculoskeletal, neurological, and degenerative conditions.

The qualification explores clinical reasoning and assessment processes, along with the advanced techniques used for conditions. Participants will learn how to optimise aquatic treadmill settings by manipulating water height, incline, resistance, and speed variations to target specific rehabilitation goals. Therapeutic exercise and movement shaping techniques will be covered to enhance proprioception, muscle engagement, and joint mobility, with a strong focus on tailoring treatment protocols for orthopaedic, neurological, and post-surgical rehabilitation, as well as performance conditioning. Emphasis is placed on assessing the individual and clinical decision making to ensure safe and effective treatment, alongside professional responsibilities such as ethical practice, legal compliance, and record-keeping.

This unit equips learners with the essential skills and knowledge to perform comprehensive canine assessments within a clinically reasoned framework. It explores the key components of the assessment process, including both subjective and objective evaluation, while highlighting the importance of setting SMART goals to guide effective treatment planning. Learners will develop a deep understanding of clinical reasoning in hydrotherapy, learning how to apply it when selecting appropriate treatment techniques to ensure safe and effective care. The unit also examines the role of re-assessments and outcome measures, focusing on the accuracy, reliability, and validity of assessment processes. In addition to technical skills, learners will enhance their communication abilities, developing strategies for engaging with canines, owners, and the Multidisciplinary Team. Emphasis is placed on handling challenging conversations in a clinical setting, ensuring practitioners can navigate complex interactions with confidence and professionalism.

In this unit, learners will develop advanced clinical competencies and refine proprioceptive treatment techniques for using an aquatic treadmill in canine hydrotherapy. They will integrate their understanding of canine assessment, behaviour, functional anatomy, breed-specific traits, and the pathophysiology of various conditions to select and apply appropriate treatment strategies. The unit encompasses a broad range of practical skills, including therapeutic preparation, safe equipment operation, controlled entry and exit procedures, and continuous health monitoring throughout treatment sessions. Learners will also explore the application of manual therapy, movement shaping, and therapeutic exercises to enhance mobility and muscle function. Additionally, they will develop expertise in providing effective aftercare, assessing treatment outcomes, and adapting techniques in response to the canine’s progress to ensure optimal rehabilitation and performance.

Over 3 full days of practical training in Stafford or Bristol, learners will work with a team of industry experts to gather practical skills and put their knowledge into practice. Learners will work with a range of real life patients with varying conditions, and will be expertly guided. Assessment of practical skills will follow.

This specialised course is designed exclusively for qualified canine hydrotherapists seeking to enhance their expertise in advanced treadmill therapy. Combining in-depth theoretical knowledge with intensive hands-on training, this programme focuses on optimising the use of aquatic treadmills to support canine rehabilitation, performance conditioning, and chronic condition management.

Participants will refine their clinical reasoning skills, learning to assess gait patterns, muscle activation, and joint mechanics in real-time. The course covers advanced therapeutic techniques, including controlled speed variations, incline adjustments, resistance training, and proprioceptive exercises to maximise rehabilitation outcomes. Emphasis is placed on case-based learning, enabling practitioners to tailor treatments to individual canine needs while considering biomechanics, pathology, and behavioural responses.

A strong focus on safety, risk assessment, and clinical decision-making ensures that hydrotherapists can confidently adapt treadmill protocols for post-surgical recovery, neurological conditions, mobility impairments, and athletic conditioning. Sustainability, equipment maintenance, and legal compliance are also integral to the training, providing a comprehensive approach to professional hydrotherapy practice.

By completing this intensive practical training, hydrotherapists will gain the advanced skills and confidence to deliver precise, outcome driven treadmill therapy that enhances mobility, strength, and overall wellbeing in canine clients.
